HM Prison Durham, Category B prison in Elvet, Durham, England
HM Prison Durham is a Category B prison located in Elvet that houses around 1000 male inmates, including remand prisoners and those in segregation units. The facility consists of seven wings with designated areas for healthcare services and specialized accommodation.
The prison opened in 1819, bringing together several earlier custodial buildings from the area. Between 1869 and 1958, it carried out 95 judicial executions.
The prison maintains educational programs through Novus, offering courses in data input, bricklaying, woodwork, painting, decorating, and waste management.
Visits must be scheduled between two weeks and 24 hours before arrival, and all visitors must bring valid identification. Personal items need to be stored in lockers before entering the facility.
Until 2005, a high-security female wing operated within the facility but was converted to an all-male setting following a series of incidents. This restructuring represented a significant shift in how the prison functions.
