The Victoria, Grade II listed pub and hotel in Hallgarth Street, Durham, GB.
The Victoria is a two-story pub and hotel on Hallgarth Street with red brick walls and stone details at the corners. The entrances display mosaic tiles, while the interior features original cast iron fireplaces and wooden flooring that date from its construction.
The building was designed and constructed in 1899 by Newcastle architect Joseph Oswald. Original Victorian fixtures, including the wooden bar counter and period details, have been preserved since its opening.
The pub keeps a separate section with cut-glass panels where women and children could once purchase ale away from the main bar area. This room division still shows how social customs of that era shaped the way people moved through everyday spaces.
The building offers accommodation and refreshments with multiple entrances for easy access throughout the space. The interior spans different levels, so stairs are part of navigating the layout.
A carved stone tablet on the exterior shows a portrait of Queen Victoria in her youth. This feature honors the historical figure after whom the pub was named.
