High Glanau, Arts and Crafts manor house in Cwmcarvan, United Kingdom
High Glanau is an Arts and Crafts manor house on elevated ground with a broad slate roof, gabled turrets, and stone-walled terraces. The building sits in a position that overlooks the landscape of the Vale of Usk.
The manor was completed in 1922, designed by architect Eric Francis for Henry Avray Tipping, who was the architectural editor of Country Life magazine. Its creation reflected the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement through custom-built residential design.
The formal gardens display design principles from the early 20th century with structured terraces, an octagonal pond, and extensive herbaceous borders. Visitors can see how these elements work together to create a thoughtful arrangement across the landscape.
The property remains private but opens its gardens to visitors on select days throughout the year through the National Gardens Scheme. Visitors should check ahead to find out when these opening days take place, as they are limited.
The interior was designed specifically to accommodate the owner's collection, with details like ribbed plasterwork and a distinctive staircase with pierced splat balusters. These features show how space and decoration were personally tailored for the collector.
