Hilston Park, Grade II* listed manor house in Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, Wales.
Hilston Park is a Grade II* listed manor house in Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, Monmouthshire, Wales, set in the Monnow valley. The property covers a main house with classical columns, entrance gates flanked by early 20th-century lodges, a ruined coach house, formal gardens, woodland, and a lake with a boathouse.
The present house was built in 1838 for George Cave, a Bristol banker, after a fire destroyed the earlier structure on the site. Before that, the estate had been in the hands of the Catholic Needham family from the 1660s onward.
Hilston Park sits in the Monnow valley and carries the kind of layout typical of a wealthy 19th-century country estate, where gardens, woodland, and water were arranged to impress as much as to please. The lake with its boathouse gives the grounds a particular character that visitors still notice today.
The estate is in a rural part of Monmouthshire and is most easily reached by car. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground can be uneven and some of the older structures on the property are in a deteriorated state.
A red sandstone tower, known as Hilston Tower, stands in the northeastern corner of the grounds and was built as a decorative feature rather than for any practical purpose. Ornamental towers of this kind were fashionable on large country estates during the 19th century, though they are rarely the first thing visitors notice.
