Hastings Contemporary is a contemporary art museum located on The Stade in the Old Town area. The building's entire exterior is covered with dark glazed tiles, creating a bold presence alongside the traditional seafront structures and fishing heritage of the neighborhood.
The museum opened in 2012 as the Jerwood Gallery, establishing a dedicated contemporary art venue in the town. In 2019, it underwent a name change to Hastings Contemporary as it transitioned to independent operations.
The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions that reflect current artistic practice across Britain and beyond. Visitors encounter contemporary works that engage with themes relevant to today's visual culture.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and sits directly on the seafront, making it easily accessible from the main town. Its location next to the historic fishing beach allows visitors to combine their visit with a walk around the Old Town.
The building was designed by the local architecture firm HAT Projects and won a national award for its innovative approach. This recognition made the museum structure itself a notable example of contemporary coastal architecture.
