Latymer Upper School, Independent school in Hammersmith, England.
Latymer Upper School is an independent school in Hammersmith, within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, teaching pupils from age eleven to eighteen. Classes take place in several buildings along King Street, which accommodate the daily work of the institution.
The foundation came in 1624 through a bequest from Edward Latymer, originally providing education for eight boys from poor families in Hammersmith. Over the centuries the institution grew and began admitting girls from 1996 onward.
The name honors Edward Latymer, a 17th-century merchant who left funds for local education. Today boys and girls attend classes together, after the institution gradually introduced mixed teaching over more than a decade.
Admission takes place through an examination and interview when children turn eleven. Parents should check application deadlines well ahead, as the process closes several months before the school year begins.
About one in five pupils receives a substantial bursary based on family income. The leadership plans to raise this figure to one in four by the 400th anniversary.
