Roman Temple in Jordan Hill

The Roman Temple in Jordan Hill is an ancient religious structure whose foundations remain visible today. The layout consists of an inner shrine area surrounded by an outer wall that once supported columns around its perimeter.

Workers discovered a container holding hundreds of Roman silver coins in 1812 while working the field, drawing initial attention to the site. The location dates to when Romans controlled southern England and built temples to honor their gods.

The site is open and freely accessible on an open field with no entrance fees. Visitors should bring weather-appropriate clothing since there is minimal shelter and the ground is uneven in places.

An underground shaft at the site contained burial items and ritual deposits, suggesting the temple served healing purposes. These findings show that people came here not only to worship but also to seek recovery from illness.
