Lodmoor, Protected wetland site in Dorset, England
Lodmoor is a protected wetland site covering around 71.5 hectares of reed beds, salt marshes, wet grasslands, and open water near Weymouth in Dorset. Greenhill Beach forms a natural barrier between the reserve and Weymouth Bay, creating a sheltered habitat.
A protective sea wall built during the 20th century altered the site's natural tidal flow patterns. This change left the area subject only to freshwater flooding during winter months rather than regular salt water influence.
The site is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and attracts visitors interested in watching birds in their natural habitat. People come throughout the year to observe and photograph the many species that live here or pass through seasonally.
The site offers three separate walking trails for different access points and experiences. You will find a visitor center, outdoor exercise equipment, play areas, and designated viewing spots for wildlife observation.
The wetland supports breeding populations of several bird species throughout the year that nest and raise their young here. Bearded tits, Cetti's warblers, marsh warblers, and northern lapwings return to breed in this habitat.
