Jubilee Theatre, Theatre in St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
The Jubilee Theatre is a performance space housed within St Nicholas Hospital, featuring a flat stage floor and six large windows along each side that bring in natural light. A narrow balcony runs across the rear, offering additional seating and a different sightline for performances.
The theatre opened in 1900 following architect John W Dyson's design from 1897, which was created specifically for the hospital's needs. This establishment marked the beginning of a performing arts tradition within the hospital walls.
The decorative proscenium arch displays two female figures crafted in Royal Doulton ceramic, reflecting the artistic care invested in the space. These ornamental elements signal how the theatre was designed to be a refined cultural venue where art mattered in every detail.
The venue accommodates around 400 visitors and features technical infrastructure including timber fly systems, a performance grid, and dedicated dressing facilities. The setup allows the space to serve different types of performances and events throughout the year.
The original sprung dance floor made from maple wood demonstrates that the space was built to serve both theatre productions and dance events. This dual purpose is further underscored by the intact orchestra pit, which remains visible to this day.
