La Charrette, Railway carriage cinema in Parkmill, Wales
La Charrette is a functioning cinema housed in a restored 1920s railway carriage at the Gower Heritage Centre in Parkmill. The space holds around 23 seats and continues to operate as a screening venue in this unusual converted setting.
The building was constructed in 1953 by electrician Gwyn Phillips as a village cinema in Gorseinon and served the community for decades. It was moved and reassembled at the Gower Heritage Centre in 2008 to preserve its heritage.
The cinema keeps records of every film shown here since opening, creating a living archive of local viewing history. People gather in this repurposed space to experience movies in an intimate and personal setting.
Visitors can arrange private screenings for groups up to 20 people using their own DVDs, Blu-rays, or USB drives with personal film selections. It is best to book in advance and confirm your format requirements before arrival.
The structure was divided into six sections for transportation when moved from its original location to the heritage centre. This careful disassembly and reassembly demonstrates the effort required to preserve this unusual venue.
