London Butterfly House, Butterfly house in Brentford, England
The London Butterfly House was a butterfly facility in Syon Park, Brentford, made up of three heated greenhouses filled with tropical plants and hundreds of butterfly species from around the world. The greenhouses maintained a warm, humid temperature so the butterflies could fly freely through the air.
The London Butterfly House opened in 1981 in Syon Park and welcomed visitors for over 25 years. It closed in 2007 when plans for a hotel development within the park grounds brought its operation to an end.
The London Butterfly House was popular with families and school groups, as visitors could walk freely through planted rooms and watch butterflies at close range. This kind of direct experience with living insects was still rare in Britain at the time.
The London Butterfly House is permanently closed and can no longer be visited. Its collection of butterflies and plants was moved to The Butterfly and Wildlife Park in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, where living butterflies can still be seen today.
Although the site sits near a lake within Syon Park, the building itself was demolished after operations ended. There are no remaining structures to visit, and the area is now part of a hotel development.
