Lud's Church, Chasm in Back Forest, Staffordshire
The Lud's Church formation extends 100 meters in length and reaches 18 meters deep, featuring moss-covered walls and hanging vegetation throughout its passages.
During the 15th century, followers of religious reformer John Wycliffe, known as Lollards, gathered in this concealed location to conduct their worship services.
The chasm holds connections to medieval literature as scholars identify it as the Green Chapel mentioned in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
The ground inside remains wet throughout the year, requiring sturdy footwear as visitors navigate through narrow passages and descend rocky steps.
The temperature at the bottom of the chasm stays consistently cool regardless of external weather conditions, creating a microclimate for specific plant species.
