Mann Island Buildings, Modern architectural complex at Liverpool Waterfront, United Kingdom
Mann Island Buildings is a contemporary complex at Liverpool Waterfront made up of three angular structures with black granite and glass exteriors. The development houses residential apartments, shops, offices, and a gallery space, positioned between the historic Three Graces buildings and Albert Dock.
Construction began in 2008 when Liverpool was redesigning its waterfront and becoming a major cultural destination for visitors from across Europe. The buildings replaced former storage facilities that once served the city's historic port.
The RIBA North gallery inside the complex hosts exhibitions about architecture and design for visitors interested in contemporary creative work. Local communities and tourists use the public spaces around these buildings to walk, rest, and observe how modern structures fit into historic Liverpool.
Visitors can walk through the public areas around and between the buildings during the day, with easy pedestrian access to the waterfront promenade. Shops and cafes within the complex make it a convenient spot to pause while exploring Liverpool's Waterfront.
Two triangular residential towers create covered courtyards where apartments receive light from two sides, an unusual design choice for modern structures. The polished granite surfaces act as mirrors, reflecting the surrounding historic buildings and shifting light throughout the day.
