Port of Liverpool Building, Grade II* listed office building at Pier Head, Liverpool, England.
Port of Liverpool Building is a protected office structure at Pier Head in Liverpool, England. The design shows a central dome and uses reinforced concrete wrapped in Portland limestone cladding with copper accents at several points.
Construction took place between 1904 and 1907 following a design by Arnold Thornely for the harbor authority. This administrative body used it as headquarters until 1994, after which the space took on other functions.
Maritime symbols appear on the facades, reminding visitors of the city's seafaring past and the people who worked in shipping offices here. The building stands with two other structures on the waterfront, forming a group that many travelers recognize from photographs taken along the riverbank.
Restoration work in 2009 adapted the interior spaces for modern use while keeping structural elements from the Edwardian period intact. Visitors can view the facades and exterior from the waterfront walkway, since the inside holds office spaces.
The foundations go deeper than most waterfront buildings because the site was once a dock basin. Engineers had to develop methods to handle water pressure and create a stable base below the surface.
