Masthouse Terrace Pier, pier on the River Thames near the Isle of Dogs
Masthouse Terrace Pier is a pier on the River Thames on the Isle of Dogs in north London. It serves as a stopping point for ferries and river buses where passengers board and disembark, located at the end of Napier Avenue near Westferry Road.
The pier was developed as part of the Isle of Dogs' historic dock infrastructure, which became a major shipping center from the 1800s onward. Today it remains an active landing point for modern river transport, connecting residents and visitors to different parts of London.
You can reach the pier easily by bus (lines 149, 188, 277) or on foot in about 11 minutes from Mudchute Station on the Docklands Light Railway. The pier has simple, ramped access suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, and river bus lines RB1 and RB6 run regularly with wait times around 20 minutes.
The pier sits near the launch site of the SS Great Eastern, a ship that was launched into the water in the 1860s by renowned engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This massive vessel was the world's largest steamship at the time and left a lasting mark on the location's maritime heritage.
