Mavisbank House, Category A listed country house in Lasswade, Scotland

Mavisbank House is a country house near Loanhead featuring two flanking pavilions connected by curved walls. The structure displays classical Palladian design with symmetrical proportions and carefully composed elevations reflecting early 18th-century tastes.

Sir John Clerk partnered with architect William Adam to build this country villa between 1723 and 1727. The project emerged as an elegant escape from Edinburgh's urban environment and followed contemporary European design principles.

The building served multiple purposes throughout its existence, transforming from a private residence to an asylum before suffering extensive fire damage in 1973.

The building is currently undergoing major restoration work, so access may be limited or restricted for safety reasons. Check current conditions before visiting to confirm whether exterior viewing or guided visits are available.

A devastating fire in 1973 caused severe structural damage and left the property dormant for decades afterward. The scars from this fire remain visible in the walls, telling a story of loss and the lengthy path to recovery.
