Milecastle 12, Roman milecastle in Heddon-on-the-Wall, England.
Milecastle 12 is a Roman fortification near Heddon-on-the-Wall that lies beneath the modern Town Farm. This small garrison was part of the Roman frontier defense system and was built as a standardized fortress structure.
The fortification was built in the early 2nd century by the Legio VI Victrix and later expanded in the classical Roman frontier style. The site underwent changes in its strategic role within the broader Roman border defense network.
Two inscriptions found in 1746 during the Military Road construction indicate rebuilding work performed by the Legio VI Victrix at this defensive position.
The ground is inaccessible today because modern buildings completely cover the ancient structure. Visitors can explore nearby sections of Hadrian's Wall along the B6318 and the Military Road.
Coin hoards were buried and discovered at this location in 1752 and 1820, suggesting long-term occupation. These finds indicate that people concealed valuable possessions at this spot across different centuries.
