Milecastle 13, Roman military fortification on Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England
Milecastle 13 is a Roman military fortification located along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. This small stone structure served as a checkpoint and garrison point within the larger defensive system that stretched across northern Britain.
This fortification was built during the 2nd century as part of Rome's frontier defense system under Emperor Hadrian. Archaeological discoveries indicate the site remained actively used for several decades.
The garrison of 20 to 30 Roman auxiliary soldiers controlled the movement of people and collected taxes on goods passing through the frontier gates.
The site is accessible on foot via the Hadrian's Wall Path, which allows visitors to walk along the ancient fortification. The location is remote, so it helps to check local conditions and plan your route in advance.
The structure features a Type I north gateway design and was constructed by the Second Legion Augusta, who were stationed at Isca Augusta.
