Milecastle 15, Roman military post in Whitchester, England.

Milecastle 15 is a Roman military post in Northumberland with stone foundations still visible along the southern side of Military Road B6318. The platform stands roughly one meter high, and its outline remains clear in the landscape today.

This fort was built around 122 AD under Emperor Hadrian, likely by the Sixth Legion Victrix. It formed part of a massive defensive line constructed to secure Roman territory in Britain.

This post served as a checkpoint where Roman soldiers watched over travel and trade moving through the region. You can still sense how it functioned as part of a much larger defensive network stretching across the landscape.

The site is located west of the A69 and easily reached via Military Road B6318. The area is open and freely accessible, though sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are recommended for exploring the rolling terrain.

This fort was discovered from the air in 1958 through Royal Air Force photographs, which revealed its distinctive rectangular shape that was invisible from ground level. This find demonstrated how aerial photography could uncover Roman structures hidden beneath the modern landscape.
