Middleton Lakes RSPB reserve, Nature reserve in Middleton, United Kingdom
Middleton Lakes is a nature reserve near Birmingham comprising wetlands, meadows, and woodlands that support diverse wildlife. The River Tame runs through the northern section, creating habitats where water birds, insects, and plants thrive together.
The reserve was established in 2011 on land that was previously worked as a gravel pit by an aggregates company until 2007. The bird protection organization then acquired and restored the site into a wildlife sanctuary.
The site reflects how former industrial land can transform into a valued community space for nature watching and outdoor exploration. Local people use the pathways regularly to connect with wildlife and experience the changing seasons in a managed landscape.
The reserve can be accessed from Bodymoor Heath Lane with parking available for visitors. Bringing binoculars and a field guide helps you get the most from observing the wildlife throughout the site.
English Longhorn cattle graze the meadows and help create conditions suitable for skylarks to nest successfully. This traditional grazing method is part of how the reserve manages the land to support breeding birds.
