Monkredding House, Category B listed house in Kilwinning, Scotland.
Monkredding House is an L-shaped structure with a harled exterior, two stories, and a corner staircase turret in North Ayrshire. Datestones from 1602 and 1638 mark the facade, while southern extensions were added during the early 1800s.
The property belonged to Tironensian monks of Kilwinning Abbey until 1539, when the Nevin family acquired the lands and built the original tower house. Later changes expanded and altered the building to create its present form.
The house connects to Robert Burns' literature through a local blacksmith named John Niven, who likely inspired a character in the poem "Tam o'Shanter". This literary link attracts visitors interested in the poet's work and the people who shaped his writing.
The building is located in Kilwinning and visible from outside, though it remains in private ownership. Visitors can view the architectural details from the street and explore the surrounding area near Kilwinning Abbey.
Local reports suggest an underground tunnel extends from the house to Kilwinning Abbey, hinting at historical connections between the two structures. This hidden detail often surprises visitors who overlook such connections.
