Mounteagle transmitting station, Transmitting station in Highland, Scotland
Mounteagle transmitting station is a transmission facility in the Scottish Highlands featuring a 243.8-meter steel lattice mast. The station broadcasts signals across multiple communities in the Moray Firth region and surrounding areas.
The facility was established in 1961 by the Independent Television Authority to broadcast ITV programmes to North East Scotland via Grampian Television. This marked the beginning of television service for the region and set the foundation for later broadcasting expansion.
The station brought commercial radio to northern Scotland starting in 1982 when Moray Firth Radio launched its broadcasts from this location.
The mast is visible from distance across the hilly landscape and serves as a local landmark. Visitors should respect the surrounding area and keep clear of any safety barriers surrounding the facility.
When color television broadcasting started in the region in 1969, this station handled VHF signals while the nearby Rosemarkie facility managed UHF transmissions. This split arrangement allowed both technologies to operate side by side during the transition period.
