Foulis Castle, Category A listed castle in Kiltearn, Scotland.
Foulis Castle is a white mansion that incorporates an old tower house featuring gun loops, situated about two miles southwest of Evanton. The structure displays Scottish fortification features that were expanded and modified over different periods.
The original fortress was established in 1154 and served as a residence for the MacKenzie of Foulis family across centuries. This long-term occupation by one family greatly shaped how the place developed.
The castle's Gaelic name translates to 'castle gaunt-peaked, the eagle's nest' and comes from 15th century records. This name captures how local people saw the structure's dramatic position and striking silhouette.
Visitors can join guided tours to explore the grounds and learn about Scottish fortification architecture. It helps to check in advance when tours are offered and how best to reach the location.
Four cannon loops from the early 1500s were discovered in 1985 hidden behind blocked openings, revealing hidden defensive capabilities. These findings during repair work show how much history remains concealed within the walls themselves.
