Northumberland Street, major shopping street in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne
Northumberland Street is a pedestrian shopping street in central Newcastle upon Tyne, running from Haymarket Metro station in the north to Monument Metro station in the south. It contains major retailers like Marks & Spencer, Primark, and Tesco alongside cafes, restaurants, and banks.
In the 1800s, Northumberland Street was a suburb of brick houses called Bath Road after the Northumberland Baths opened in 1839. Major shops like Fenwick's department store began opening in the late 1800s, and the street was closed to traffic in 1998 to become fully pedestrian.
The street's name Bath Road referenced the Northumberland Baths that once opened here in the late 1800s, a facility that shaped the area's identity. Today it functions as a gathering place where locals and visitors move through together, and holiday seasons bring festive window displays that turn shops into seasonal attractions.
The street is closed to traffic for pedestrians only, with delivery vehicles allowed only early in the morning; bicycles and skateboards are not permitted. The ground is level and easy to walk, with benches and seating recently added throughout.
Marks & Spencer installed a green wall covering around 167 square meters with nearly 16,000 plants on its storefront. This living covering is an unexpected touch on an otherwise concrete shopping street and offers shoppers a moment of natural interest.
