Montagu Bastion, Military bastion in Gibraltar, United Kingdom.
Montagu Bastion is a five-sided stone fortification along Gibraltar's defensive walls with strategic gun positions and structures built to resist naval attacks. The structure serves today as a youth hostel with about 40 beds and also houses various cultural facilities.
The bastion was built on the remains of an earlier Spanish fortification and received major expansions in the 1790s under military supervision. These works made it a key position in Gibraltar's defensive system.
An art gallery for contemporary works now occupies sections of this bastion and displays modern pieces within historical military rooms. Visitors can view exhibitions set against the backdrop of old stone walls and fortress architecture.
Visitors will find a youth hostel, cultural exhibitions, and historic fortification structures to explore here. It's best to wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to walk through the stone structures and walls.
Old shield structures from the 1800s remain visible on the walls, originally designed to protect large guns. These metal-reinforced structures show the technical sophistication of those weapons.
