Grand Battery, Artillery battery in Gibraltar, United Kingdom.
The Grand Battery is a fortified artillery position on Gibraltar's northern face, stretching between the Moorish Castle and the Tower of Homage. It contains seven gun placements built into the rock and shows how military engineers adapted defenses to the landscape.
The fortification underwent major rebuilding in 1627 following Don Luis Bravo de Acuña's recommendations to strengthen military defenses against attack. During the 1704 siege, it held its position under intense bombardment, when it was called Muralla de San Bernando.
The battery reflects the evolution of military engineering, transitioning from Moorish archery towers to modern artillery platforms through various architectural adaptations.
Visitors can reach this location on Gibraltar's northern side easily from town and examine historical fortification techniques up close. The rocky terrain has natural elevation changes to explore on foot and requires comfort with heights.
During the 1704 siege, the Grand Battery, then known as Muralla de San Bernando, maintained its defensive position despite intense bombardment from opposing forces.
