Princess Caroline's Battery, Artillery battery on Willis's Plateau, Gibraltar
Princess Caroline's Battery is a fortification located on the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in northern Gibraltar. The structure features underground ammunition storage and several observation positions that offer wide views over the surrounding area.
The battery was constructed in 1732 under King George II as part of the fortifications protecting the territory. A major modernization took place in 1905 when advanced guns were installed to strengthen its defense capabilities.
The site served as a key military post that protected the territory and housed various regiments over time. Today visitors can see memorial displays honoring the soldiers who served here across different periods.
Access is available daily and admission is included with the Nature Reserve entrance ticket. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the path to the battery involves steep and uneven terrain.
The ammunition storage room was cleverly designed to allow daylight inside without requiring open flames, which protected soldiers from danger. This design choice shows how military architects found practical solutions for the hazards of storing explosives safely.
