Prince's Lines, Military fortification system on the Rock of Gibraltar, United Kingdom
Prince's Lines is a fortified system running along the northwest face of the Rock at about 70 feet above ground level. The structure contains defensive walls, gun emplacements, and underground passages that connect to adjacent fortifications.
The fortification was established during the colonial period and underwent major modifications in the 1700s, particularly under engineer William Green. These changes were designed to strengthen defenses against attacks from the sea and from the nearby peninsula.
The discovery of a human skeleton during construction indicates the archaeological value of this military site on the Mediterranean peninsula.
Access is gained through walking routes or guided tours that ascend from lower areas of the Rock. The paths can be steep and require sure footing, so proper footwear is important.
During World War II, the fortification received additional rifle loopholes and searchlights to improve coastal defense. These additions show how it remained an active military site well into the 20th century.
