Moorish Castle

The Moorish Castle is a fortress on the Rock of Gibraltar featuring thick limestone walls and a central tower structure. The complex occupies a commanding position on the northern slope of the rock, overlooking the harbor and surrounding terrain.

The fortress began as a military stronghold in the 8th century during Marinid rule, built to control access through the Mediterranean straits. This strategic purpose remained central to its function across subsequent centuries.

The Tower of Homage stands as the tallest Islamic-era structure in the Iberian Peninsula, representing the architectural achievements of medieval North African builders.

Access involves steep and uneven pathways, so sturdy footwear and physical preparation are important considerations. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon to avoid intense sun and crowds.

The site functioned as a prison until 2010, making it one of the oldest continuously-used correctional facilities within a medieval fortress. This unusual dual purpose is still evident in different sections of the structure today.
