Montefiore Synagogue, Neoclassical synagogue in Ramsgate, England
Montefiore Synagogue is a neoclassical building in Ramsgate with a painted stucco exterior and marble finishes throughout its interior. Architect David Alfred Mocatta designed it in 1833 to serve as a private Orthodox place of worship for the Montefiore family.
Sir Moses Montefiore acquired East Cliff Lodge in 1831 and then commissioned the synagogue as his private place of worship. This founding was part of the early Jewish settlement in this English coastal town during the Victorian period.
The synagogue reflects the Victorian Jewish community that settled in this coastal town. It shows how members of the wealthy Montefiore family expressed their faith and identity during an era when Jewish communities in England were still small and scattered.
Visitors can arrange tours by contacting ramsgate@montefioreendowment.org.uk at least three working days in advance. Winter hours run from 9:30 to 15:00, so plan your visit accordingly during the colder months.
The facade features a clock inscribed with 'Time flies, virtue alone remains,' a rare detail among English synagogues. This message merges architectural design with a timeless spiritual statement that strikes visitors upon arrival.
