Oasis Leisure Centre, Entertainment complex in Swindon, England
Oasis Leisure Centre was an entertainment complex in Swindon featuring a lagoon swimming pool with artificial rocks and waterslides sheltered beneath a 45-meter diameter glass dome. The facility also contained fitness suites, sports courts, and dedicated spaces for fitness classes and group training.
The complex was built between 1974 and 1975 and opened to the public in January 1976. It operated continuously until November 2020 when it closed permanently.
The facility became a meeting place for the community, where families and friends gathered regularly to enjoy its recreational spaces under the distinctive glass dome. It held an important role in local life as a destination where people spent their leisure time together across different seasons.
The facility offered multiple activity areas where visitors could choose from water-based recreation or land-based sports and fitness. Different zones were designed for different activity types, allowing guests to plan their time based on their interests.
The rock band Oasis took their name from this leisure centre after Liam Gallagher spotted it on a tour poster in his bedroom. This chance discovery created an unexpected cultural link between the venue and one of the most popular bands of the 1990s.
