STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway

STEAM is a railway museum housed in a restored Grade II historic building, displaying locomotives, carriages, and technical artifacts spanning different periods. The collection documents how railway technology evolved from the 1800s onward and shaped the way people and goods traveled.

The Great Western Railway was founded in the 1800s under the vision of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who established Swindon as its main locomotive manufacturing hub. The company and the town grew together, transforming the area into a major railway center.

The exhibits tell the stories of workers who built and maintained the Great Western Railway through their everyday tools, uniforms, and belongings. These objects reveal what daily work was like for railway employees and their importance to the company's growth.

The museum is centrally located in town and easy to reach, with plenty of space to explore the different exhibition areas at your own pace. Plan extra time if you want to try the interactive experiences, especially the train simulator and signal box activities.

Visitors can experience what it felt like to operate a steam train or handle railway signals through a working reconstruction of an original signal box from the Great Western Railway era. These hands-on activities bring the daily work of railway staff to life.
