North Down, Parliamentary constituency in County Down, Northern Ireland
North Down is a parliamentary constituency in County Down on the eastern coast of Northern Ireland, covering towns like Bangor and Holywood alongside smaller communities and coastal villages. The district elects five Members of the Legislative Assembly to represent its approximately 70,000 residents.
The constituency was originally created in 1885, dissolved in 1922, and restored in 1950 when electoral boundaries were reorganised. This reinstatement shaped the modern electoral district that exists today.
North Down maintains strong political traditions with representation from multiple parties including the Democratic Unionist Party, Ulster Unionist Party, and Alliance Party.
The area spreads along the coast and is easily accessible by various transport links, with major towns like Bangor well developed and connected. Visitors should know that local facilities and services are less frequent in smaller villages compared to the town centres.
During the 1955 election, North Down recorded an exceptional 96.8 percent voter support for the Ulster Unionist candidate George Currie.
