North East Land, Sea and Air Museums, Aviation museum in Sunderland, England.
The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums is an outdoor and indoor museum in Sunderland, set on a former RAF airfield, displaying aircraft, military vehicles, trams and maritime objects from several decades. The collection covers both military and civilian machines, ranging from early propeller planes to postwar jets.
The museum was founded in the 1970s by a group of aviation enthusiasts who began collecting aircraft on a disused military airfield in Sunderland. Over time, trams, maritime objects and other transport were added, turning it into a broader record of how people and goods moved across the region.
Many of the vehicles on display were once used in the North East of England, giving the collection a local character that visitors from the region often recognize. Old trams and regional aircraft connect the exhibits to everyday life as it was lived here, not just to national history.
The site is mostly outdoors on a large flat area, so comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if the weather is changeable. Visiting takes a few hours because the exhibits are spread across a wide space and there is no fixed path to follow.
The museum is home to one of the last surviving Hawker Siddeley Trident airliners, a jet that was once common on European short-haul routes but has almost entirely disappeared from public view. The aircraft has been restored and can be seen up close, which is a rare opportunity given how few remain anywhere in the world.
