North Tower, Residential high-rise building in Salford, England
North Tower is a residential building with 23 stories and approximately 80 meters in height located in Salford, housing roughly 100 apartments and a hotel in its lower sections. The structure sits close to the River Irwell and Manchester Cathedral.
The building was completed in 1966 using an innovative construction method with a climbing shutter for the central core. This technique allowed lower floors to be occupied earlier while work continued above.
The tower takes its name from its location on the north side of the district and became a symbol of Salford's shift from industry to residential living. The way it rises above its surroundings reflects the era's optimism about modern vertical living in the city.
The building sits in a well-connected location with direct access to public transportation linking both Salford and Manchester city centers. Its proximity to the river and museums makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the two downtown areas.
The exterior was built using prefabricated panels installed by tower cranes, a method that was novel for high-rises at the time. This approach proved more efficient than traditional brickwork and set standards for later projects in the region.
