Porton Down, Science park in Wiltshire, England.

Porton Down is a science park in southern England, about five miles northeast of Salisbury in the county of Wiltshire. The site includes several modern laboratory buildings and administrative spaces spread across an extensive campus surrounded by security fencing and green areas.

The facility was established during World War I in 1916, when the British Army set up an experimental station for chemical research here. After World War II, the focus gradually shifted from pure weapons development to broader scientific investigations in biology and health security.

The facility takes its name from the nearby village of Porton and was originally built for military research purposes. Today, specialists in medicine, biology, and security technology work here on scientific projects that also have civilian applications.

The site is not open to casual visitors and can only be accessed with prior authorization. Those attending business meetings or conferences should bring identification documents and allow extra time for security checks at the entrance.

The facility houses some of the most secure laboratories in Europe, designed for work with highly dangerous pathogens. Parts of the site remain off-limits even to staff from other departments, as they form strictly controlled containment zones.
