ROC Post Speke, Nuclear monitoring post in Speke, England.
ROC Post Speke is an underground concrete monitoring station located near Liverpool in northwest England. The facility features a vertical access shaft descending to an observation chamber equipped with instruments designed to detect and measure nuclear radiation.
The post was built between 1958 and 1968 as part of a nationwide monitoring network during the Cold War. It was one of over 1,500 similar posts that covered the United Kingdom to protect the public from potential nuclear attacks.
Three civilian volunteers worked in shifts inside this underground station to collect data about potential nuclear explosions for public safety.
The site is not regularly open to visitors as the facility remains in private ownership and access requires permission from the current owners. The location can be found using standard coordinates, but visits depend on advance arrangement.
The bunker structure was built with 7-inch (18 cm) reinforced concrete walls designed to withstand nuclear blast pressure. This robust construction reflects the serious threat assessment that Britain faced during the height of Cold War tensions.
