Popton Fort, Military fort in Angle, United Kingdom
Popton Fort is a hexagonal military installation with ramparts and five-sided bastions at its corners, surrounded by a defensive ditch on its southern side. The structure contains two distinct battery sections: the Moncrieff Battery on the western side and the Open Battery in the northern area.
The fort was built between 1859 and 1864 and formed an inner defensive line for Milford Haven together with Fort Hubberstone. The installation was part of a broader coastal protection strategy planned for South Wales during this period.
The fort shows Victorian military design through its grey limestone walls and separate quarters for officers and soldiers. This arrangement reflects how the military organized and housed its personnel at the time.
Access to the fort is via a footpath from the nearby road, and the grounds are relatively flat and walkable. When visiting, you should allow enough time to explore the different battery sections and the outer walls.
The western battery was fitted in 1869 with special Moncrieff carriages, a modern technology at that time, which was later removed in 1886. This modification reveals how rapidly military technology evolved and how quickly earlier innovations became outdated.
