Stack Rock Fort, Military fortification in Herbrandston, Wales
Stack Rock Fort sits on a small island in Milford Haven Waterway and was built from limestone, granite, and concrete to protect the harbor entrance. The structure includes several gun levels stacked above each other and arranged around a central courtyard.
Between 1850 and 1852, a small fort with three guns was first built on the rock. From 1859 to 1871, it was greatly expanded to keep pace with the development of armored warships.
The fort was one of several military works along the waterway and earned local nicknames because of its position on a rock in the water. The structure shows Britain's attempt during the Victorian era to secure its harbors through small, heavily armed island forts.
The fort sits on an island in the water and can only be reached by boat. The site is not open to the public, but you can view it from shore or during boat trips through the waterway.
The first three guns and their tower remained inside the later expansion and form a kind of hidden building within a building. This enclosed core is not visible from outside and surprises visitors who know the military construction history.
