East and West Blockhouses, Device fort at Milford Haven, Wales
East and West Blockhouses are defensive structures located at the tip of Angle peninsula, positioned about 115 feet (35 meters) above Milford Haven Waterway. Both stone buildings were arranged to control access to the harbor below.
King Henry VIII commissioned these defensive structures in 1539 to protect against possible invasions from France and Spain. They were built during a period when European conflicts posed threats to England.
The structures showcase Tudor military design with defensive features built to protect against sea attacks. Visitors can see how these buildings were arranged to command views of the waterway below.
The site connects directly to the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and sits within walking distance of Angle beach. This location allows for easy exploration of the wider coastline and nearby areas.
The East Blockhouse remains the only surviving structure of its kind in Wales and is now protected as a scheduled monument. Its design still displays eight gunports that once made it a formidable defensive position.
