West Blockhouse Fort, 19th-century coastal artillery fort in Dale, United Kingdom
West Blockhouse Fort is a fortified structure built in the mid-1800s positioned on a rocky outcrop above Milford Haven Waterway. The building features thick limestone walls reinforced with granite battlements and interior stone vaults designed to withstand artillery fire.
An earlier fortification occupied this site in 1539, but was replaced in the 1850s by this new artillery fort as naval threats evolved. The fort formed part of a broader coastal defense strategy against French naval power during the Victorian period.
The name reflects its defensive role on this exposed position overlooking the waterway. Today you can walk through the restored barracks and officers' quarters, seeing how daily life unfolded for the soldiers stationed here.
The fort functions as holiday lodging managed by a heritage organization, so access is primarily for guests staying overnight. The clifftop location requires climbing steps and walking paths, so comfortable footwear and some physical effort are needed to reach and explore the building.
Unlike many similar forts that were abandoned between the World Wars, this one continued to serve a military purpose during that quieter period. The original vaulted ceilings designed to deflect artillery rounds remain intact, which is uncommon in forts of this type.
