Quarry Wood, Local nature reserve in Preston-on-Tees, England
Quarry Wood is a local nature reserve in Preston-on-Tees featuring a central pond surrounded by dense woodland that forms an enclosed natural space. The pond is fed by natural springs and maintains a relatively constant water level, while footpaths weave through the woodland around it.
The site was worked as a Whinstone quarry from the early 1800s until the middle of that century, with the main shaft positioned beneath the current pond. After quarrying stopped, the excavated areas filled with water and the site was eventually designated as a protected nature reserve.
The reserve serves as a local gathering place where residents come to walk and watch birds among the trees. People value this protected space as a peaceful spot within reach of their homes.
The reserve is best explored on foot or by bike, with paths winding through the woodland that are manageable for most visitors. Early morning or weekend visits tend to be less crowded and offer better chances to spot wildlife.
Some visitors use a specific section called The Dippers for mountain biking, where natural variations in the terrain create small jumps and features. This use shows how the restored quarry land now serves different recreational purposes beyond traditional nature watching.
