The building opened in 1997 funded by the National Lottery and replaced two earlier cultural venues that had served the town. It represented a major renewal of the city's arts infrastructure, bringing different performance and exhibition activities under one roof.
The center hosts theatre performances, dance shows, and art exhibitions throughout the year that shape the cultural life of the town. These events draw people together from across the region to experience art and live entertainment.
The complex is centrally located and easy to access, with parking available and multiple entrances for different areas. A cafe and two bars are located within the building, offering convenient places to have a drink or refreshment before or after your visit.
A motorized rotating wall section titled 'Over Easy' by artist Richard Wilson spins at the heart of the building as a striking architectural installation. This kinetic artwork functions both as a creative statement and a memorable centerpiece that catches the attention of many visitors.
