Princes Square, Category B listed shopping center in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, Scotland
Princes Square is a multi-story shopping center with a large glass dome that spans a vaulted interior. The various floors provide space for numerous shops, restaurants, and cafes beneath this distinctive roof.
The building was designed by architect John Baird in the 1840s and has shaped the area since then. Major renovation work in the 1980s transformed the former square into a modern shopping center.
The name comes from the original Princes Square, once an open plaza surrounded by buildings. The spaces today display handcrafted details by local artisans throughout, giving the interior distinctive character.
The center spreads across multiple levels, so plan time to orient yourself as you explore. Its location on Buchanan Street makes it easily accessible, with several entrances and exits throughout the building.
During an expansion in the late 1990s, the original cellars beneath the old building were excavated to create additional retail space. This work connected the complex to Queen Street and opened new gallery areas.
