RAF Burtonwood, former air force base in Cheshire, England
RAF Burtonwood is a former military airfield located near the village of Burtonwood in Cheshire, England. The site had runways, large hangars, and maintenance buildings designed to support military aircraft operations.
The airfield was built in the late 1930s and served both the Royal Air Force and, heavily, the US military as a major supply and repair base in Europe during World War Two. After the war, the US Air Force continued to use it before the site was eventually closed as an active military base in the 1990s.
Burtonwood is remembered locally for the strong American presence it once had, when US personnel shaped the character of surrounding villages. Some pubs and place names in the area still carry traces of that era.
The site is no longer an active military base and has been largely redeveloped, so no special military clearance is needed to visit the area. A trip there makes most sense if paired with some prior research into its history, as few original structures remain on the ground.
During World War Two, Burtonwood was the largest Allied military airfield in Europe, with thousands of American technicians repairing and maintaining aircraft on site. That scale made it one of the most important logistics points on the entire western front.
