Sandwell Valley RSPB reserve

Sandwell Valley RSPB reserve is a nature reserve in Sandwell featuring Forge Mill Lake surrounded by woodlands, wetlands, and open grassland. These different habitat types create spaces where many bird species can find food, shelter, and nesting opportunities throughout the seasons.

This area was once a landfill site before being converted into a nature reserve. Native trees and shrubs were planted to rebuild the habitat and turn the former industrial land into a thriving wildlife space.

The place serves as a gathering point for people interested in watching birds and learning about local wildlife. Local visitors value it as a space where art and nature connect through its distinctive entrance.

The reserve can be accessed from multiple walking paths that begin at Forge Mill Farm car park. An elevated bird hide on stilts provides good vantage points for observing waterfowl and other species on the lake.

The lake also functions as a storm water retention basin positioned within a bend of the River Tame. This dual purpose design allows nature conservation and water management to work together in one space.
