Rother Valley Country Park, Country park in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Rother Valley Country Park is a large open-air recreation area in South Yorkshire, England, built around four artificial lakes surrounded by woods, meadows, and open grassy spaces. Sailing, windsurfing, and fishing are available on the water, while a network of walking and cycling paths covers the rest of the grounds.
The land was used for open cast coal mining before local authorities decided to transform it into a public recreation space. The park opened in 1983 and has been open to the public since then.
The Bedgreave Mill visitor centre displays the original mill mechanism and explains how water was once managed to prevent flooding in the area. The building links the industrial past of the region to the green space visitors walk through today.
The park has parking areas at several entry points and paved paths that work for different mobility needs. The grounds are large, so it helps to decide in advance which part you want to focus on rather than trying to see everything at once.
The park runs a miniature railway with two locomotives that has been carrying passengers around the grounds since 2009. The route runs alongside the lakes and gives a view of the water that you would not get on foot.
