Shettleston, Residential district in east Glasgow, Scotland
Shettleston is a residential district in east Glasgow located between Parkhead and Baillieston, with the River Clyde forming its southern boundary and railway tracks marking its northern edge. The area spans several square kilometers with a mixed built environment of homes and local facilities.
The area developed from a small village in Lanarkshire into a Glasgow district, documented in a papal record from 1179 as a settlement. This early mention shows the place had a long history rooted in medieval times.
The district carries several names across different languages: Shuttlestoun in Scots and Baile Nighean Sheadna in Scottish Gaelic, reflecting its multilingual heritage. These names show the cultural depth of the region and its ties to older communities.
Shettleston railway station on the North Clyde line connects the district directly to Glasgow Queen Street, while the A89 road serves vehicular traffic through the area. From here, visitors can easily reach the city center or other eastern neighborhoods.
In the 1980s, the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal program modernized the district by replacing coal fires with gas heating and developing industrial estates. This transformation played an important role in reshaping the area during a key period of the city's development.
