Alexandra Parade, Alexandra Park, Cast Iron Fountain
Alexandra Parade, Alexandra Park, Cast Iron Fountain, Cast iron fountain in Alexandra Park, Glasgow, Scotland.
The fountain in Alexandra Park is a cast iron structure featuring ornamental details including columns, obelisk finials, and a solid domed canopy on a double plinth base. The construction displays fine craftsmanship with its intricate decorative work.
Walter MacFarlane's Saracen Foundry built the fountain, which was relocated from Kelvingrove Park to Alexandra Park in 1914. This move occurred after the 1901 International Exhibition when the city's parks were being reorganized.
The fountain displays crocodile motifs and the Glasgow Coat of Arms, reflecting Victorian values about public life and civic pride. These ornaments show how such monuments once expressed a city's identity.
The fountain is located in Alexandra Park and is easily accessible from various pathways within the park. When visiting, keep in mind that maintenance work may occur, so it is wise to check conditions beforehand.
Inside the structure are four column connectors with descending crocodile decorations and a central putto figure seated on an upturned urn holding an oar. These hidden details show the foundry's care for design in areas visible only from certain angles.
