Scout Hall, Grade II* listed house in Shibden, England
Scout Hall is a three-story stone structure with 52 rooms located on a hilltop overlooking upper Shibden Dale in West Yorkshire. The building spans multiple construction phases and demonstrates the substantial scale of this historical house through its extensive interior layout.
The Mitchell family built Scout Hall in the late 1600s on land that previously held two large Elizabethan houses from 1315. This new construction replaced those earlier structures and marked a significant transition in the site's development.
The building displays multiple architectural styles from Jacobean through Italianate, added over several centuries of occupation. Visitors can observe these different periods reflected in the stonework, window designs, and interior details throughout the structure.
The exterior stonework requires substantial repairs and the building remains on the Heritage at Risk Register. Visitors should be aware that access and inspection opportunities may be limited depending on the current condition and conservation status.
The structure features 12 bays, 52 doors, and 365 windows, which some interpret as representing months, weeks, and days of the year. Whether this numerical arrangement was intentional or simply a curious coincidence of the building's growth over time remains an intriguing question.
